Physical Activity Increases Male Lifespan

  • August 11, 2016

A long-term study published by the British Medical Journal suggests physical activity reduces risk of death in males by 40%. They found only 30 minutes of light to vigorous exercise 6 days per week reduces risk of death of all causes.

This data is fairly important given the overall sedentary lifestyle in this country. What this means is males should be encouraged to remain active even as they age. Participating in moderate exercise led to an average increase in age by 5 years compared to being sedentary. Moderate exercise is any activity that gets the heart pumping at a rate over baseline for a sustained period. Examples of moderate exercise include swimming, cycling, weight lifting and hiking among others.
