A Sprained Ankle Requires Treatment

Jul 13, 2026 | 0 comments

A sprained ankle is a rather common ailment that requires treatment. It may seem like something one can just walk off, BUT issues may appear later as a result of no treatment. But the pain went away quickly, why do I need treatment? Great question, lets get into that.

When a person sprains their ankle, there is a stretching of the ligaments (most often on the outside of the ankle). When these ligaments get stretched, they do not return to their original length…they become “looser”.  Typically, the muscles around the ankle will compensate for this. However, over time that 1st sprain often leads to an increased likelihood of another. It is the repeat nature of sprains that causes issues for a person as the ligaments becomes more stretched over time. Multiple sprains also result in altered gait mechanics which can lead to a variety of additional aches and pains in the foot/ankle or higher up the leg.

Why does this happen and what can be done to prevent future issues?

A sprain to the ankle results in a change to the finely tuned balance mechanism of the joint. Over time these subtle changes can produce bigger issues for the individual. Thus, working to address the balance mechanism can reduce the potential for longer term issues, AND lower the risk for future sprains.

When should I seek treatment and what can be done?

Treatment can and should be sought within days of the 1st ankle sprain. The best provider is a physical therapist who can quickly help restore range of motion to the stiff ankle which impacts walking in some. Once motion is restored then strength, balance, and agility work are integrated. By working through these steps the likelihood of future sprains will be reduced as well as the development of compensatory injuries due to a weak ankle.
