Those with a meniscus injury wonder whether it requires surgery. The answer really is it depends. There are many factors at play as to whether a meniscus injury requires surgery. With that in mind, let’s discuss those factors.
One, is it impacting your daily life and recreational activities? If the answer is no, then certainly avoid surgery. If the pain, however, is limiting your activities then further consideration must be given to the other factors.
Two, what type of injury or tear is it? Understand that the meniscus changes with age. It is common for individuals over the age of 40 to have what are call degenerative tears in the meniscus. This is a normal part of aging and often does not cause too many issues from a functional standpoint.
Three, can you get the knee through its full range of motion? There are certain instances where a person cannot fully bend or straighten their knee because of their injury. If that is the case where range of motion is “blocked” by the injury, then surgery may be necessary. If you have full motion and it is not necessarily painful then there may be an option to avoid surgery.
Four, have you worked to address strength of the lower body, the quad in particular? In many cases, stronger quads and lower body in general can provide enough support for the knee that surgery may not be necessary. If you have not worked on your strength, that should be done regardless of your final decision on surgery or not.
Finally, have you worked with a rehab provider first? EVEN if a person has a “problematic” meniscal tear, working with a rehab provider enhances the chances of not needing a surgery. By working to maximize range of motion, strength, and balance many individuals can return to activities as desired without pain. Worst case surgery is ultimately necessary…but wouldn’t it be nice to avoid it?
