Have you ever had back pain so severe you can’t stand up? Pain so severe that it literally prevents you from moving. This is a routine event affecting millions of people. Sometimes the pain comes out of nowhere. It just seems to strike with seemingly little movement. In some cases the onset of pain can be tied directly to lifting or bending/twisting. Yet it is so strong it prevents people from completing even simple daily tasks or work.
When this happens people seek any solution that will ease the pain. Heat/ice may help some. Pain medication may take the edge off, but it will not address the primary cause. Some will call their PCP or maybe an orthopedic. That is fine but understand they will offer meds and tell you to stay active or maybe even to avoid all activity. Sure, they may take images but that will not solve any problem.
What then is left?
Getting to the root cause. What specifically triggered the pain and as a result is “irritated”? What exactly is stopping you from standing up tall? Learning this information will guide the medical provider (physical therapist) to prescribe the best treatment plan possible. This expert therapist will gather information from that initial visit that will enable them to navigate a path forward to help you stand tall again. This process may include hands-on treatments as well as specific exercise. If done properly, the pain should lessen while the ability to stand tall improves. As the pain reduces, the individual should be able to be more active.
This next part is key…once the pain reduces and a return to movement happens, the individual must keep going. The root cause of the problem needs to continue to be addressed. Stopping treatment once the pain subsides is the #1 way for the pain to return and be worse. You must keep working on strengthening and mobility exercises.
People will routinely stop the program that helped them to feel better only to suffer again months or years down the road. Don’t allow Back Pain SO SEVERE You Can’t Stand up to come back. Learn the steps necessary to prevent that whether you are currently in pain or want to prevent it from happening again.
