Roughly 80% of people will experience back pain during their life. 90% of those will deal with at least one additional episode. But there are some who deal with episodic back pain, meaning pain that comes and goes regularly. This type of pain will often impact daily life and function. Things like sleeping, dressing, work, and even exercise becomes impacted. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn how to prevent episodic back pain?
For many who experience back pain, they do what is necessary to reduce or resolve the pain. Often this will involve some form of
exercise (strengthening, mobility work, or stretching). But then once relief is achieved, they stop what helped to get them pain-free. They will be fine for weeks or even months, but then the pain returns…sometimes even worse. And then the process begins all over again. WHY?
Why is it that people routinely stop what helps their back (body) to feel better?…until it hurts again. Maybe it is time to start treating the back better.
It is time to treat your back from a preventative maintenance standpoint. Treat your back health like you do your dental health. Regular daily care to prevent future issues. When provided with a routine or plan to get out of pain, continue that plan. If the plan has become stale, boring, or too easy, then go back to the person who provided the plan for a more challenging plan…or at least a modification to keep it interesting.
If you are a DIY person who has treated their back for years with the wait and see approach or “I do it myself” plan but continue to experience episodic pain, then it is time for professional help and guidance. A muscle and joint expert (a physical therapist) will assess and develop a plan for you…so that your back no longer hurts on a regular basis.
