For anyone suffering with back pain your goal should be to avoid low back surgery at all costs. While a person may be struggling with back and or back and leg pain, consideration of surgery should be the last resort. All other avenues of treatment should occur first.
In fact, a person’s first call should not be to their doctor or orthopedic surgeon. Not that there is anything wrong with either, but the tendency is toward imaging too quickly…which then increases chances of more invasive treatment options. What should the
first step be? To call a physical therapist. These muscle and joint experts will work to help the individual with back pain restore their strength, mobility, and function.
Research indicates that those with back pain respond BEST to treatment within the first month and still respond well up to 3 months. The message…it is better to seek care more quickly to avoid negative effects of long-term pain. This is not to say that a person with back pain for 6 months or more cannot be helped. Rather the data suggests it may take longer to achieve the resolution the person is looking for.
So, if you or someone you know has been dealing with back pain for more than a few weeks it would be best to seek care sooner than later. Do not allow the negative effects of long-term pain to impact daily life.
Why else should one avoid back surgery? Well, once a spine is altered via surgery it will never be the same again. The movement patterns change putting more stress on other segments. And often strength of the spinal muscles is never the same again…unless a person puts in consistent work. Yes, the pain may lessen or go away…for a time. But research suggests a person who has had surgery is more likely to require a 2nd back surgery within 10 years.
Yes, there are a few select instances where surgery is absolutely necessary and must occur. But the majority of cases though, even those with severe pain, can recover without surgery. Time to put in the work to resolve the back pain. And if, and only after extensive rehab and other treatment options should anyone consider back surgery.
