When a person sustains an injury their first thought should be to see a physical therapist. However, many often think they need to see an orthopedic first when they sustain a muscle or joint injury. That is fine IF you have concerns for a dislocation or fracture or there has been trauma. BUT if you developed an ache or pain over time (without trauma) even if the onset is sudden, your first provider does not need to be an orthopedic. The first call you make should be to a physical therapist.
Why you say? Because orthopedics deal in imaging, injections, and surgery. Most injuries do not require any of those three
options. A physical therapist on the other hand treats people with muscle and joint aches or pains. They help people to regain mobility, strength, and function.
But don’t I need imaging first? Again, not unless there is a concern for a fracture or dislocation. Even in the case of say a sprained knee. Many can be resolved with time and therapy. IF however, during your examination and treatment by a physical therapist your condition is not responding as expected or findings suggested need for further assessment, you will be referred onto the best orthopedic for your condition.
Don’t I need a script to see a physical therapist? No. You can go directly to a physical therapist to address your ache, pain, or functional limitations. In this way you can speed up your process of healing. No need to wait weeks to see a PCP or orthopedic before the suggestion is made to go see a physical therapist.
