Have you ever spoken the words or thought that your head too heavy for your neck? There are plenty out there, some reading this who know exactly what I mean. This is not a fun feeling…where it feels hard to hold your head upright. Often times these folks will feel ok to start the day but will typically worsen later in the day when the muscles get tired.
Many times when people say their head is too heavy they feel it is the only description they can provide. The pain and heaviness that builds over the day reaches the point where all they want to do is lay down. They want their head supported. Then maybe, just maybe the pain will reduce. It is not uncommon for these individuals to experience headaches as well. You know the ones that feel like they start in the neck and wrap up into the back of the skull, maybe even over the top. Sound familiar?
If so, then let’s talk about what is going on and what can be done.
Generally speaking, when people have the feeling that their head is too heavy for their neck it suggests two things. One that there is some weakness of the supporting neck muscles. Number two, the overall endurance of the neck muscles is not where it needs to be. Neither of those comments should be all that surprising, but what is important is that something can be done to solve the problem.
The first step here is to have a good evaluation. That way a professional can root out the specific item(s) to address…strength, endurance, or perhaps even some stiffness. Then, and this is the important part…will be to follow the plan for strength and endurance. A program will be developed and titrated to the appropriate level of difficulty. This is one condition where if the individual does not do their “exercise homework” they will not see improvement. BUT…if the program is followed, the results will follow.
You may be looking for the exact exercises to do, but the best exercise is not known unless properly evaluated. That is because if the exercise is too easy or worse too hard no positive changes will begin to happen.
