Knee Grinding

Are you tired of feeling or hearing knee grinding? Do those sounds concern or bother you? Are you worried that you are damaging your knees? Let’s discuss what is going on and just how concerned you really need to be.

So, what is that grinding sound?

Most likely it is a result of compression of the patella (kneecap) on the underneath bony structures. The compression causes a rubbing of the bony surfaces which tends to make sounds. In many instances it is just noise and no pain. But many are concerned the noises may lead to pain.

What causes the compression?

The compression can be the result of either tight or weak muscles. The tightness of the quad or thigh muscle can “pull” the kneecap such that it is pressed into the underneath structures (producing the sound). Weakness of either the quad or outer hip muscles has the potential to alter the “mechanics” of the knee joint. This alteration in the “mechanics” also has the potential to lead to noises on the joint. There are solutions for either of these issues.

Solutions?

Yes, working on flexibility of the thigh muscle and/or strengthening of the outer hip/quad can do the trick. There is no fool-proof method for success other than good old fashion working on it.

There is one other potential reason for grinding, and that is loss of cartilage on the underside of the kneecap. This can happen with age or be the result of some injury. While this can be an issue for some, it is not for all. Again, addressing strength and flexibility of the leg has the potential to improve the noises.

So, should I be worried about my knee making grinding sounds? Provided there is no pain, not really. But should you have concerns then it is wise to get it looked at. Who you ask? Well, a muscle and joint expert is the best first step. Learn which key elements are necessary to address.
