Knee Pain When Squatting?

  • March 11, 2019

Are you one of the tens of thousands of people who report difficulty squatting or bending down because of their knee? If so, know there are things that can be done to reduce the pain or trouble and avoid injections or surgery.

There are a few different reasons that a person’s knee may hurt with squatting. And… each comes with its own possible solution.

  1. Grinding or compression about the knee cap. This is very common and many report noisy knees. To help this, often some quad or knee cap stretches can reduce the stress/strain and possible associated pain
  2. Pressure about the knee. Often this is a result of the thigh and/or hip muscles not doing a good enough job absorbing stress such that it builds up about the knee. Learning specific strengthening exercises can be helpful here
  3. A sense of instability about the knee. This feeling can happen over time because as adults most do not put in the work to keep up with balance as we once did when younger. For people who feel this, balance exercises are in order to attempt to address this.
  4. A feeling of weakness. Like #2 above – strengthening of the thigh and/or hip muscles are in order to improve in this domain. Strength is key for many daily functional tasks.

Regardless of the specific cause, there is a solution out there to help the individual to bend/squat more freely and with less pain. But…only if willing to put in the work. There is no short cut to help the knee feel better.
