Do you have the thought that your knee is stopping you from exercise? That feeling of if only my knee didn’t hurt, I could exercise for my health? If so, then don’t you think it is time to do something about that?
Do you feel a sharp, catching, or pinching pain in the knee?
What about a constant dull ache?
Or maybe you can’t describe it other than to say it hurts or is a pain?
If any of these apply to you, and you are not exercising as a result, then some action needs to occur. Because that pain is not likely to just disappear on its own. If you feel your knee (or any body part for that matter) is preventing you from being active, it is time to find a solution. Waiting and hoping the pain will just go away on its own is not a good plan.
The wait and see plan is the best way to make sure that the pain lasts as long as possible. In fact, during the time of avoidance, here is what happens. For starters muscles and joints get stiffer. Muscle strength and endurance lessen. Overall body tolerance for active becomes reduced. That painful joint actually becomes more sensitive to pain due to avoiding activity. Taken together these elements all add up to a situation where resuming exercise is difficult.
The longer one is away from exercise the harder it is to resume because…remember that body soreness when starting an exercise program? Yep, that will return, and most folks view that pain as bad…even though it is just normal. What happens though is people will wait until that pain lessens. Then after a few days or a week they will try again, only to experience the same return to exercise pain. Thus they get stuck in an endless loop of inactivity. So, time to stop avoiding activity and exercise and find out how to solve the problem.
