My Big Toe is Deformed

Jun 30, 2025 | 0 comments

Are you someone who feels their big toe is deformed? The technical term is hallux abducto-valgus, more commonly known as a bunion. For some, this deformity occurs whereby the big toe will point inward. Additionally, most will develop the classic bump on the outer toe that tends to rub inside shoes.

While not necessarily limiting from a functional standpoint, footwear can become an issue. As in certain types of shoes will not fit or feel comfortable on the foot. Additionally, many eventually become bothered by appearance while for others pain may present. It is when pain appears that people tend to take action.

When this happens, many will find themselves to a podiatrist (foot doctor). Recommendations may include changing footwear, orthotics, toe spacers, and even surgery. Some will even receive the suggestion to see a physical therapist.

Is there anything that can be done to prevent or even stop the deviation of the toe?

Yes, there are steps to prevent or stop (limit) toe deviation. For starters, footwear. You want to be in a shoe where the toes do not feel too cramped. This means limiting time in pointy high-heeled shoes. If you need to or like to wear them, just try to limit your time in them when possible. Next, if the deviation has started, you can look at a toe spacer. This will help limit just how much the toe can point inward. Additionally, you may be a candidate for special shoe inserts that can reduce pressure on the big toe. The last step to try to prevent toe deformities is physical therapy. Learn how to better stretch and move the toes, foot, and ankle. This can help to slow the development of a bunion.
