Is Cracking My Neck Bad?

  • April 15, 2019

That snap, crackle, or pop (of the neck), is it a bad thing? This is an often-asked question by people with neck pain.

In most instances the answer to this question is NO, there is nothing wrong. To begin with, the noise a person hears is merely a release of “gas” pressure between joints within the neck (or any body part for that matter). It really is no different than “cracking” one’s knuckles.

Often, people routinely “crack” their neck because it feels better afterward (at least for a short time). Why just a short time? This short-term feel good happens because after the “pop” the individual experiences a period of time with increased movement or a sense of looseness. After a period of time the “pressure” between the joints in the neck will build back up again(This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about). And this will be followed by the desire to “crack” the neck again.

The frequent need or desire to “crack” one’s neck often is an indicator that the neck needs something more. As in more regular active motion or strengthening. Take this cue, the need to “crack” the neck, as a sign to start moving your neck more and learning some strengthening exercises for the neck.

Not sure where to begin? Check out some of the exercises provided HERE. Hopefully they get you moving but if not, nothing to fear. That just means a little more guidance will be necessary.
