Rotator Cuff Injury

Are you concerned your shoulder pain is due to a rotator cuff injury? Every year millions of people report shoulder issues of some origin. The rotator cuff consists of four muscles which serve to “stabilize” the shoulder and enable proper function. If any of the four muscles is impacted, pain could result.

What you should know is over 50% of people over the age of 40 have some kind of “change” in their rotator cuff…but NO pain. As the body ages, so do the muscles and joints. Bone and tendons just look different and change over time. So, just because there may be “change” on imaging does not necessarily mean it is the culprit.

How can I know if the rotator cuff is causing the pain?

Well, there are numerous clinical tests that can be performed by a doctor or physical therapist to determine the source of the pain. Once determined to be a “problem” several treatment paths are available. A doctor may prescribe pain medication and rest. An injection may be offered. Or physical therapy may be recommended. Generally speaking, all roads will lead to a physical therapist…it is just how quickly an individual arrives there. That said, one must wonder if that is where most end up…why not start there? Great question.

Why physical therapy?

Well, generally speaking any muscle injury such as with the rotator cuff will require some TLC to get it functioning optimally again. This may require hands-on mobilization or stretching, strengthening, and dynamic movement pattern control work. A physical therapist is an expert in that realm. Sure you can try that sheet of exercises a doctor gave you or try some movements you saw online…BUT are those the best exercises for you? Far too often people will take that approach for weeks or months only to sit in front of a physical therapist frustrated with their continued pain.

So again, why not start with physical therapy 1st and sooner than later?

The answer should be clear. If you are looking to get back to activities without pain, getting help from a physical therapist is highly recommended.
