For those with chronic back troubles many wonder why back pain keeps coming back? It is a great question and one with a not so simple answer.
Let’s begin with a little bit of background here. Based on statistics a person has an 80% chance of back pain at any point in their life. Then of that 80% who have had back pain, 90% of them will have at least 1 more recurrence. So those numbers are rather high. What the data does not say is how long or severe a person’s symptoms will be.
Based on the data, we know that there is a high probably of back pain coming back. But the real question is WHY? As usual there is not one easy answer as to why. Reasons can include repeated physical stress/strain with work or recreation as well as impact or trauma stemming from a fall or car accident. Another more common cause is the reason for the initial pain was never fully addressed. This could be a flexibility/mobility issue or a muscle strength and coordination deficit.
Given the last line above, it is important that people fully solve their initial back troubles. This is as opposed to just getting by and then returning to what you were doing before. This is where many recurrent issues begin. Once a person no longer feels limited by their back pain, they just get back to it. They fail to keep working on the necessary items such as mobility, strength, or coordination. It is here that preventative maintenance comes into play. After all your teeth are not looked at and cleaned 2x/yr and then you do nothing in between. You work daily to keep your teeth healthy and so should you with your back.
Once you get on a successful routine for your back, it should be continued. Now that is not to say you need to spend an hour each day doing exercise. But 10-15 minutes per day working on key elements for back health is not unreasonable.
