It is a common occurrence that people find stretching doesn’t help their back pain. Why is it that stretching doesn’t always work?
Well, for one stretching just doesn’t work for everyone. There is no one size fits all approach to treating back pain.
And the lack of benefit from stretching likely means one of two things.
First, stretching is not what the back needs at that moment in time. Generally speaking active movement which includes stretching is good for the body, but there are times when that is not necessary. Or it could even be that the stretch(es) being done are not the “right” ones at the time.
Second, when stretching does not work, this very well might mean that strengthening or muscle control exercises are necessary. See, when a back is “injured” the muscles can enter a period of time where they do not work optimally. And this can lead to issues with “control”. This control can be relearned quickly via specific exercises.
If we step back a moment to consider stretching, one must carefully listen to their body. Does a particular stretch or movement make the back feel better for more than 30 minutes? If so, then it might be a stretch to continue, if not then it probably isn’t right at that time. If a stretch makes one feel worse during, definitely stop.
