Muscle Cramping

Jul 28, 2025 | 0 comments

Muscle cramping is an issue for many individuals whether they exercise or not. For some, these cramps may appear randomly and at inopportune times…such as when trying to sleep. There are many theories about cramping and a multitude of home remedies. There is so much information out there that it can be hard to know what is true/not. The good/bad news is that while the medical community knows some – all is not known. The exact cause is not always easy to determine and the best solution for one person will not necessarily work for the next individual. This makes it challenging and frustrating to deal with the cramping issue. So what exactly can cause muscle cramping?

Potential Causes

  • Lack of hydration
  • Vigorous exercise/fatigue
  • Electrolyte (nutrient) imbalances- potassium, magnesium, and calcium are most often discussed
  • Medication side effects- diuretics and statins are the two big ones
  • A symptom of other medical conditions- vascular or thyroid issues

Ok, so we know some potential causes. But what about solutions that can reduce or eliminate the cramping? See below for some suggestions…and it may also involve discussion with your doctor if the cramping is related to any prescription medication.

Possible Solutions

  • Stretch
  • Heat/ice
  • Hydrate
  • Eat bananas, drink tonic water or pickle juice
  • Massage
  • Walk it off

While you as an individual or any medical provider can speculate on the suspected cause and or remedy, it is hard to know for sure. That is without some trial and error. Steps can be taken to address any of these items above or more, but only testing them out can hopefully reduce a person’s tendency to cramp.

Frustrated by cramping? Talk with your medical provider about any medical conditions, medications, diet, and exercise habits. Hopefully working through the list can help narrow down potential causes and possible solutions.
