What is the difference between Tennis and Golfers Elbow?

Is my elbow pain tennis or golfer’s elbow? Good question and neither are necessarily related to participation in either activity.

Let’s discuss the difference between tennis and golfers’ elbows. Generally speaking, tennis elbow is outer elbow pain while golfers’ elbow is inner elbow pain. In reality it is not quite that simple so let’s get into more specifics.

With respect to tennis elbow, this condition is a “strain” of the outer elbow muscles/tendons. It is also termed lateral epicondylalgia meaning lateral elbow pain. This condition is usually one of over-use. Rarely is a single event going to trigger the onset of pain. These muscles are active and in use with pretty much all activities that involve your hands (gripping, twisting, turning, pulling, writing, etc). Try to come up with some activity you use your hands for that do not active these muscles…you can’t. Bottom line, trying to create a “balance” of the muscles of the forearm will be necessary (more to come).

In the case of golfers’ elbow (a.k.a. medial elbow pain), the muscles/tendons of the inner elbow are irritated. This condition tends to be more “traumatic” in nature, meaning more often a single episode or event can be the trigger such as grounding a golf club. Additionally, repeated throwing of a ball could also result in strain to this part of the elbow.

From a treatment perspective, each elbow condition requires a specific plan. The primary goal is to reduce the amount of stress/strain that is producing the pain. From there, working to address the muscle balance around the forearm/elbow muscles is necessary. Ultimately then once the tissues are calm, a gradual build up of activity again will be necessary.

Now that you know a bit about the difference between tennis and golfers’ elbow, how do you know what to do?

Well, this is where the guidance of a physical therapist is beneficial. This expert in muscle and joint care will be able to develop a plan specific to you…so that your pain is addressed and you get back to the activities you enjoy.
