Did you know that you are able to be treated by a Physical Therapist (PT) without a referral? It’s true, you no longer need to see a doctor first before going to a PT for help with your muscle and joint pain.
Not that long ago, you did in fact need a doctor’s script before seeing a PT. This wasted time (sometimes weeks) and resulted in people living in pain much longer than necessary. Additionally, in many cases the doctor was merely a stopping point in the journey to pain relief. That is because the doctor did not have anything to offer with respect to muscle and joint pain. That is unless you were just seeking pain meds.
So back to the good news. If, for example, you sustained a muscle/joint issue over the weekend while doing yard work, you do
not have to wait days or even weeks before you are finally able to see the BEST person to help your issue. You can call up the PT 1st thing Monday morning and start getting treatment in potentially 24-48 hrs.
You will be thoroughly evaluated and treatment will begin that 1st day. You can begin to feel better within that 1st hour of evaluation and treatment. Where else does that happen? Not only that, but you will be shown exercises/stretches/movements to perform at home to compliment treatment and further speed your recovery.
But what if I need an x-ray or MRI? What if I need an injection or pain meds? Well, those issues can be discussed and if appropriate further consultation with the appropriate provider for those items can be discussed. And if anything unusual appears during the exam that warrants further investigation you will be referred to the best provider.
So…bottom line, it is now easier than ever to begin treatment for your muscle/joint pain. All you need to remember is that if you begin to have an ache or pain or start to have difficulty with daily activities, your 1st call should be to a PT.
