When to see a Physical Therapist

Oct 6, 2025 | 0 comments

October is National Physical Therapy month, and so this month I will explore topics related to this profession. To kick off this month-long series, I answer the question…when to see a physical therapist?

Some people may only think about seeing a physical therapist after surgery or major injury. While those are common reasons to see a physical therapist, there are many other reasons.

  1. To address small aches or pains before they become big problems. Too often when people experience an ache or pain, they will take the wait and see approach. And while for some that may work, many will continue to struggle for weeks or months. They will wait to address the problem until it impacts their daily life in a significant way. By then though it will take much longer to recover than if the problem was dealt with promptly.
  2. To prevent future issues from developing. You probably regularly visit the dentist or eye doctor and take the necessary steps to avoid bigger issues. And you probably brush your teeth as well to prevent cavities. So why not get your muscles and joints looked at…and then take steps to prevent future issues? Many physical therapists encourage and offer routine muscle and joint assessments to help people to be proactive.
  3. Prevent falls and maintain your independence as one ages. It is common for people to be less active as the age. And with reduced activity often comes a loss of strength and balance. Falls can be devastating to a person’s independence as they age. Look to age better by learning how to best work on your strength, flexibility, and balance. Do not allow age to keep you from participating in the activities you love.

There you go, three very important reasons to see a physical therapist beyond major injury or surgery. If you or someone you know fits any of those three criteria, then it is time to make an appointment to see a physical therapist.
