Pinching Feeling Reaching Overhead

Nov 10, 2025 | 0 comments

Have you experienced a pinching feeling reaching overhead? That bothersome pain only present in a narrow range and goes away as soon as you get the arm lower again. You may even get a similar pinching feeling reaching in other directions as well.

This description fits with a condition often referred to as subacromial impingement syndrome (or more commonly shoulder impingement). This occurs when the head of the shoulder (humeral head) compresses ligaments/tendons into the underside of the acromion. There are numerous structures in this space and are susceptible to this compression event. The “event” could be the result of some injury or excessive stress/repetitive strain from daily activities. For most though, they are able to reach and move their arm in any/all directions without any compression.

Why is it then that some folks deal with this condition while others do not? There is not one specific reason why or why not. Events happen that result in issues for some but not others.

Is there anything that can be done to treat this condition? Absolutely.

A thorough examination by a physical therapist can determine the most likely cause and solution for the pain and impaired function. Often treatment will include some form of hands-on care to address tightness or limited mobility of the shoulder or scapular region. Mobility work for the thoracic spine might be necessary as well. Additionally, strengthening of the rotator cuff and/or scapular muscles will likely be integrated.

How long does this issue take to resolve?

Generally speaking, a few weeks provided it is treated sooner than later. By limiting the offending activities plus working through the rehab process most will be able to get out of pain and back to function quickly. Those who wait longer are more likely to deal with pain for a longer time frame. Additionally, those who put off treatment longer run the risk of causing greater injury to the muscle/tendons. So…bottom line, do not wait to solve that pinching feeling reaching overhead.
