Neck or Shoulder Pain?

Nov 24, 2025 | 0 comments

Trying to decide if that pain is neck or shoulder pain? That area of soreness or ache that lives in the region between your neck and shoulder. In truth the issue could be related to either or both at the same time.

Commonly people will attempt to “stretch” but too often it only results in short term relief if they get relief at all. Yet, people will continue “stretching” for weeks or months just hoping it will get better. But when it doesn’t, frustration appears and many are not sure where to turn…until one day someone connects them with a health professional who offers further guidance and asks good questions…

How then is one to know which is the source of the pain? Well, the answer to that question will take further questioning and a thorough physical examination. One must first understand when and how the problem began. Then, what makes it feel better or worse. From there a thorough examination can be performed ultimately arriving at a solution for the problem.

What needs to be looked at to know what the problem is?

That begins with testing out the neurological system. The tester needs to know if there is any potential for nerve related involved that could point to the neck as the source. Second, looking at the range of motion of the neck, upper back, and well as the shoulder. If motion is limited and painful – chances are it could be the source. Next, are there any strength imbalances that can be determined? Then, testing mobility of the neck, upper back, scapula, and shoulder should be performed. Do any of those tests provoke or relieve? Either can be useful information. Finally, by adding up all these pieces, the examiner should be able to determine the most likely source.

From there, an appropriate treatment plan can be determined. Most likely some form of hands-on treatment plus active exercise will be integrated into a comprehensive plan. Additionally, a proper plan will also include a series of exercises or movements that the individual will be able to perform at home to progress toward becoming pain-free again.
