Why Does Back Pain Keeps Coming Back

Apr 6, 2026 | 0 comments

Many with back pain wonder why back pain keeps coming back. The simplest explanation is that the issue was never properly addressed even though the pain many have lessened or gone away. This is likely true to some extent, but the issue runs deeper. Let’s explain.

When people experience a back injury, this often results in small changes in the strength and/or the coordination of the spinal muscles and joints. These small changes lead to slight alterations in the body’s movement patterns which can then lead a person to be more susceptible to re-injury. Additionally, a parallel issue is avoidance of activities. People routinely avoid activities for FEAR of re-injuring their back. This avoidance leads to weakness, which can be a factor in future back troubles. In truth over time this leads people directly into future issues. In fact, data suggests 90% of people who experience a back injury are likely to experience another.

So, what should be done when a person experiences back pain?

The number ONE thing is to keep moving. Movement is good and necessary for the body. Avoidance of movement leads to issues. This does not mean doing everything unchanged. Very likely reduced activity and movement will be necessary BUT move as much as possible. Number TWO, do not just rely on pain meds until the pain disappears. It is ok for medication if necessary, providing there is no reason you should not take it. Rather take steps to address the primary problem

How does one address the primary problem?

That involves seeking treatment from a muscle and joint expert. This expert physical therapist will thoroughly evaluate your problem and develop a solution to restore proper strength, motion, and movement quality. Ultimately, they will guide you into your desired activities. Once the problem is addressed, it is necessary to continue doing what helped you to feel good in the first place. It is time to treat your back like you treat your teeth…regular preventative maintenance. Performing regular daily exercises for your back will reduce your risk of back pain coming back.
