Is Back Surgery My Only Option

Apr 20, 2026 | 0 comments

Those with severe or long-standing back pain wonder if back surgery is their only option to get rid of the pain. Many will say they have tried everything and seen many different medical providers. Some follow all recommendations to a “T” while others merely go through the motions to get to the next step. Ultimately for those who, went through a regimented rehab program and are still suffering then maybe one could consider surgery. Understand though there are no guarantees with surgery. There is a potential one could feel even worse after…

For the group who merely went through the motions, surgery is not the only option. In fact, it should be low down on the list. At the top should be a focused rehab program. Time and effort should be spent working to improve range of motion, strength, and endurance. Understand time is not measured in weeks, rather months, especially for chronic pain. Time and effort are necessary to make positive changes for the back (body).

Beyond the physical part of back pain is the mental part. Chronic back pain takes its toll mentally. People become convinced that movement and exercise are harmful. That is not true. In fact, movement and exercise are good and healthy for the back. Now you may need to start low and slow, but improvement can and will happen over time with work. Overcoming the mental component can be quite challenging. There are times when a couple of providers may be necessary to help people in this area.

All this is to say that surgery is not the only option for back pain. The primary goal should be to find a physical therapist who specializes in treating chronic back pain. Someone who works directly with you, no passing you off to support personnel.

Yes, there will be times when surgery is necessary such as when weakness appears or progressive nerve pain. Outside of that, rehab is king.
