Managing Chronic Back Pain

Aug 10, 2026 | 0 comments

Every day millions of people struggle with managing chronic back pain. Living with chronic back pain creates issues for many people. Daily, work, and recreational activities can become problematic (and painful). Not only that, but the mental stress and strain that occurs as a result living and dealing with chronic pain. When this happens, a decision needs to be made…either continue to struggle with pain or seek help.

The first path chosen by many is searching for help online. Now while you may find plenty of exercise options, will they be the best for you? Another common path is to visit their PCP or orthopedic who may provide meds, suggest imaging, and/or provide a general sheet of exercises. Again, will these exercises be specific for you and is imaging necessary? In most cases, imaging is unnecessary for back pain. For many imaging does not provide a reason why. Additionally, it only serves to worry people about normal age findings reported.

The final path people can choose (and the best one) is working with a muscle and joint expert like a physical therapist. This expert provider will thoroughly assess you, your issues, your concerns, and develop a plan to address them. In most cases, the best path forward involves a better understanding of why you hurt. With many cases of chronic pain, the person often begins to experience increased pain in response to “normal”  activities/events. With proper training, a person can once again recalibrate their system to not experience pain with “normal” activities.

You can be guided to improve your movement, strength, and endurance. As you improve in these domains, your perception and experience of pain should lessen. Now this process can take some time, but has been shown to be effective at reducing pain.
