With the arrival of the new year, many are thinking of starting a new exercise program. Losing weight and getting in better shape are often the key goals for most. Should you be focused on cardio or strength training? Or what about group fitness classes? Many are unsure just how to do it or where to begin. While others may be concerned about a current injury they are dealing with or avoiding injury. With these questions in mind lets discuss a plan for action.
To begin with, what do you enjoy from an exercise or fitness standpoint? Are you a person who likes cardio work, group exercise, or the solitude of individual strength training? The best way to achieve success is to engage in an activity you enjoy. One fast way to derail a new exercise program is trying to do activities they just can’t stand.
Next find a friend to exercise with. Build in an accountability partner to enhance your chance for success. By nature, humans do not like to let others down…so if you have a plan to meet a friend every Monday and Thursday evening for a group class, you are more likely to attend.
As you consider your fitness goals, do they include strength, endurance, power, or a mix of all? Understanding your goals can help you to find a path to meet those goals (be it building strength, improving your endurance, losing weight). If you are unsure of just how to meet them, then it may be a good idea to consult with a personal trainer…at least to begin with. They can help develop a program to meet your personal exercise needs…and help to make sure you perform exercise movements properly, especially if you are new(er) to fitness.
What about an injury or ache/pain you ask? Well, then it is probably time to get that looked at before starting a new exercise program. Injuries are a second key way that exercise programs end quickly. Who to see you ask? The answer depends on what you are looking for? If you are wanting an injection or think surgery is necessary, then an orthopedic should be your first stop. If, however, you do not think your issue needs an injection or have any interest in surgery then going to see a physical therapist first should be your path. In truth, most injuries will be resolved by a little TLC from an expert physical therapist. Allow that expert to diagnosis your issue and develop a path to success. And from that point, the physical therapist can help guide you into that exercise program you desire.
Now that you have some guidance, what is stopping you from starting a new exercise program this year?
