While it may be cold outside it is important to stay active over the winter months. Too often when the weather turns cold, people’s exercise/activity reduces. They enter a people’s version of hibernation. Only come springtime they added weight vs a bear losing it.
Many will say it is too cold outside. But that is just an excuse, unless the temperature is truly below 15-20 degrees. Even if there is extreme cold, you have options to modify or adapt an exercise program.
To begin with, consider layering up to exercise outside. Hats and gloves will be useful. As will trying to adjust your exercise time to midday. This way the sun is highest in the sky and maybe the temperature is a little less unbearable.
If that is not an option, then it is time to find a gym to utilize or join for the winter months (if you do not have equipment at home). Yes, you may not like using the treadmill but to keep that running fitness up, it may need to be done. The same can be done with cycling. Pop that bike on the trainer and you can keep going all winter long when riding outside isn’t a great option.
If you do have some equipment at home, you can create a nice exercise routine in your own home. Really all you need is a mat, an exercise ball, maybe a foam roller, some dumbbells, kettle bells, or bands. With just a few items you can develop a reasonable strength and flexibility routine.
Another option is finding an exercise class to join. It does not necessarily matter what kind of class so long as you find it interesting. Be it yoga, pilates, aerobics, or other, all can be great fitness.
So this year, look to stay active over the winter months. Need help due to an injury, lets TALK…otherwise, get moving for a healthier you.
