Properly Fueling Your Body for Exercise

Jun 29, 2026 | 0 comments

Are you properly fueling your body for exercise? Do you have trouble feeling energetic to exercise or feel like you are dragging during/after? Are you worried that your nutrition may be leading to injury? If you answered YES to any of these questions, then it is time to look at how you fuel your body for exercise.

While the body’s need from a fueling perspective do/will change based upon type of exercise, the same general principles will apply.

  1. Are you hydrated
  2. Have you been sleeping well
  3. Have you gotten enough proteins, fats, and carbs in your diet
  4. Are you training your body appropriately for your exercise goals

By taking a look at these key items, one can begin to assess whether they are properly preparing and fueling their body for exercise. As we look at these 4 items above, the first two are easier to assess and address. Hydration should be an easy one. Drink plenty of fluids, especially but not only when it is hot. Sleep is crucial element not to discount. Poor sleep will impair performance even if you are on point with the other elements.

Now when it comes to food intake, you may want to consider consulting a nutritionist. This professional can help you to maximize your eating for performance. They can develop a plan to meet the energy needs of your body relative to your exercise goals. Next, are you training appropriately? This is where a coach or trainer can help. This should not be just anyone who says they are a trainer or coach. You should look for a certified trainer/coach. This individual can help map out a training plan to help you meet your goals while at the same time making sure you stay on top of the other key elements for performance.
