If you have ever dealt with sciatica, then you know the horrible feeling. That sharp, radiating, burning pain that travels through your butt and down your leg. Maybe you have back pain as well, but maybe not. Popping pain killers, heat/ice, trying anything you can to relieve those awful symptoms. Bottom line, sciatica sucks…But is a rather common issue.
You may be asking yourself, what can I do to rid yourself of the pain? I’m sure you probably already asked a friend or Dr. Google for help. Problem is, what worked for your friend might not work for you. And more importantly, Dr. Google is not always right. You will be provided with general ideas, not necessarily the best ones for you. Thus, if you complete those exercises or stretches,
there is the possibility of feeling worse.
What should you do instead?
Well, number one, do not wait to get help. The longer sciatica is around, the longer it will take to resolve. Next, as above, do not rely on non-medical advice. Seek out the expert opinion of a medical provider who treats sciatica every day. Allow the professional to determine the best plan of action for you.
Who is best to see?
The best provider to seek help from is a physical therapist. They are the movement experts who will assess your situation and develop the best series of movements, stretches, and/or exercises to help you. Ultimately movement is best. You just need to be shown the best movement(s) for you.
Don’t I need to see a doctor first or get an MRI?
No and Absolutely NO. You do not have to visit a doctor before you go see a physical therapist. All they will do is provide medication and general advice…hopefully to go see a physical therapist. Problem is medication covers the issue and time will be wasted adding in this extra step. And as for an MRI – do you want surgery? If not, then there is no need. In truth an MRI is but 1 image in time and does not answer the question of how to best get you out of pain. Even if something may be of interest on the image, all medical providers will tell you surgery should be the absolutely last option…so don’t waste time and money chasing a picture when movement is going to help resolve the sciatica issue.
Bottom line, if you want to get out of the sciatica sucks scenario, then time to visit an expert physical therapist who treats this condition on a daily basis.
