Why do I have elbow pain every time I squeeze something?

  • June 21, 2021

Elbow pain is a common occurrence in our society. It is common because of the time spent time typing on computers, thumbing smart phones, and playing video games. At the same time, these individuals also do other repetitive tasks. These tasks include: yardwork, house cleaning, and intermittent exercise. When all these activities are combined, elbow pain can sometimes be the result.

Quite frequently when a person complains about elbow pain squeezing, it is located on the lateral elbow. This region of pain is often discussed in terms of tennis elbow. However, it is  more appropriately is termed lateral epicondylalgia because tennis players are not the only people who get this pain.tennis elbow brace

This pain or injury is most often the result of repetitive strain on the forearm muscles crossing the elbow joint. As the irritation of the muscles and tendons increase, so too does pain with activities such as gripping or squeezing. The resultant pain tends to limit physical activity and leads to avoidance of irritating activities.

Many individuals attempt to wait and see if it gets better along with taking pain medication. Others will try out a brace option. These braces may reduce some pain but do not address the cause. These three options may not be the best as the primary cause is not addressed. At times physicians will offer cortisone injections. While the injections have been found helpful in the short term (6 weeks), pain will return in many cases. Plus, the cause of the pain does not get addressed with this option.

A final option is to seek the care of a muscle and joint expert to address the reason(s) why the injury happened in the first place. A course of hands-on treatment plus active exercise has been shown to have near equal results to an injection in the short-term and superior over the long run.
