Is your body ready for winter activities

  • December 26, 2023

Now that winter is officially here, is your body ready for winter activities? Are you ready to ski, snowboard, or move snow off your driveway? Every year plenty of injuries occur landing people in rehab. Some of these injuries are preventable while others are not. Let’s now focus on the preventable ones.

Snow shoveling injuries. Snow can be quite heavy. This can cause a good deal of strain for a person’s back or shoulder. The best way to prevent issues are to hire someone else to do the job. But as most do not do that (myself included) here are some tips. 1) Take smaller loads 2) Turn your body to throw the snow vs twisting your body 3) Take regular breaks to reduce body fatigue with can lead to injury. These three elements can markedly reduce your risk of injury.

Ski and Snowboard injuries. Many of the issues I see actually come as the result of others causing falls. The 2nd most common issue is people going down trails that are too advanced- so know the best slopes for you. Finally, time to put in the work beforehand. Get in the gym to work on leg and total body strength. The stronger and more flexible you are, the less likely for injury.

Not sure what do to?

If you are healthy then finding a personal trainer can be useful. They can guide exercise and motivate you to achieve your goals. If you have an injury or concern, this is the place to visit a muscle and joint specialist. They will evaluate you and determine the best course of action for you. From there you will have a plan to keep yourself moving toward having your body ready for winter activities.
