My shoulder makes noises – is this normal?

  • December 16, 2019

Is there anything to be concerned about if my shoulder makes noises? As with many things in the human body, shoulder noises are not always indicative of something wrong.

Sometimes as the body ages – normal changes in the muscles, joints, ligaments, and fluids happen. This results in relative changes in the fluidity of movement at times. And as this happens – sometimes noises occur.

So how do we know if the noises are something more to be concerned about?

Well…is there any pain, weakness or loss of motion in the shoulder? If the answer is NO, then there is nothing really to be worried about. If the answer is YES however, to any of those three, then consultation with a rehab provider is in order.

A qualified rehab provider will be able to systematically assess what the reason for the pain, weakness, or motion loss is and then develop a plan that can resolve the issue. As with most muscle/joint issues, faster treatment (relative to onset of symptom) tends to lead to faster results. Do not wait for a small issue to become larger and impact more daily activities.

If by chance addressing the loss of motion and strength does not solve the problem, the rehab provider can then refer the person onto the next level of care if necessary.

If you are tired of hearing/feeling the noises and it is impacting your ability to complete normal daily activities then BEST next step is to do something about it. This would be a good time to get your questions answered so that you can resume daily activities more easily.
