I do not want a knee replacement

  • September 25, 2023

If you are like most you probably do not want a knee replacement. After all, who really wants to endure the pain of surgery and rehab immediately following? Your opinion was probably informed by observing a family member, friend, or acquaintance who dealt with the process.

That said, what are you willing to do to prevent needing a new knee? Most say anything, BUT then do not follow through.

So why do people get a knee replacement in the first place? Pain. Difficulty mobility. Limitation in daily function. Those are the most cited reasons. Sure, knee arthritis plays a role, BUT just because a person has arthritis does not mean surgery is imminent. If you are over the age of 40, chances are imaging of one or both knees will show arthritis. What is arthritis? Simply put, normal aging. However, arthritis is spoken of as THE reason for surgery.

Did you know that most people over the age of 40 have arthritis but NO PAIN or limitation in daily life? It’s true.

But how can that be, my doctor said arthritis is the reason I (will) need surgery? The better question is what you are willing to do now to avoid a knee replacement? Better yet, what steps can you take now before the knee is too painful or activity limiting?

In truth, actions taken by people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s can be preventative in nature. By working to address strength, range of motion, balance as well as general conditioning people can prevent the need for a new knee. The issue is people tend to not address things until problems arise. People will not work on these items until they begin to have problems with their knee. Seems odd that if there is a potential solution that people will wait. Sad but true.

But my doctor says exercise will hurt my knee and that a knee replacement is my only option? To that I say, what do you have to lose by trying? If all else fails, you can still get a brand new artificial knee. But if the plan works, you get to keep the original and not endure surgery and recovery.

If you are ready to fight to keep your knees, then no time like the present. Get moving with an exercise program.
