Exercise for your Heart Health (and more)

  • February 11, 2019

It should go without saying that exercise is good for your health- your heart health and so much more. This is something that has been well reported in thousands, probably millions of research publications by now. But does this mean that we actually take action?

That is a big fat NO. But why when there is such compelling evidence?

Need proof?…

What we know about this topic.

Exercise such that we work our body to the point of elevating our heart rate (call it moderate intensity) for about 150 min per week can:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower resting heart rate
  • Reduce risk of heart disease
  • Lower likelihood for diabetes
  • Reduce stress
  • Improve digestion
  • Improve sleep
  • Lower rate of all cause mortality

Quick, name 1 thing on this list that isn’t good? Can’t do it…so why then do we not take the steps necessary to exercise for our hearts and more? Why do we make excuse after excuse not to do something proven to benefit our health?

Pick your excuse, there really isn’t a good one. Nothing is more valuable than our health. Without it, we cannot play with our kids or grandkids, travel with family or friends, and everything and anything else that is near and dear to our hearts.

But I don’t like exercise or want to go to a gym. That’s fine, can you walk? If so, take a more vigorous walk to get your heart pumping. Prefer cycling or swimming- that is just fine too. Need motivation or accountability – try exercising with a friend or using a personal trainer. In the end, it does not matter what you do, so long as you get moving and get your heart rate up.

To recap, nothing is more important than your health…And exercise shown to be excellent for heart health and more. So start moving more for a better heart and overall health.
