My Shoulder Pops- Is that a Problem?

  • April 25, 2022

For those individuals whose shoulder pops many are concerned, but need they be? It is not uncommon for a person to experience a “pop” of their shoulder. Routinely this happens at random with a reaching movement.

What happens that makes the shoulder pop?

Well, there are a few potential reasons or sources here. One way is a muscle-tendon unit sliding over a bone. Another option is the bone rubbing against an adjoining bone. The third potential source of a pop comes from one bone quickly shifting over and relative to the joint.

Any of these events does not necessarily mean something is seriously wrong. These events can be spontaneous and not a problem. If any momentary pain felt does not linger or result in any impaired function- this is generally not an issue.

However, for some individuals this “popping” can be the result of something more severe and an issue to be addressed. At times, the pop or frequent popping as is the case can produce irritation of the tissues. This could result in pain and impact active movement of the arm. Additionally, repeated sliding or popping of the joint could cause increased movement of the joint. This is generally termed laxity and if severe enough can be problematic.

Regardless of the severity of the popping, pain and dysfunction do not have to be the reality. In most instances, a specific exercise program to address the root cause can be successful. This program can eliminate pain, improve strength, and reduce the risk of further shoulder issues.

How is that possible?

This focused program will address motion, strength, and control issues that commonly impact people of all ages. Just any old program might not be successful, but one designed for that individual has the chance of success.
