Are you someone who suffers from neck pain and headaches? Those regular annoying headaches that seem to start in your neck and wrap into your head. At times the headache may even be more pronounced than the neck pain itself. This is called a cervicogenic headache meaning a headache related to the neck.
This form of headache often develops due to tightness in the neck muscles or the upper neck joints. Typically, this tightness will impact motion in the upper neck and will create either a pressure or strain on what is called the suboccipital nerve. This nerve comes out just below the skull on either side of the spine (1 for each side). This nerve then wraps up the back of the skull traveling just above the ear and ending near that temporal spot that people often rub for headaches. Drawn as a picture it looks like a Ram’s Horn.
These cervicogenic headaches are more common than people might think and a type that is easily solved WITHOUT medication. That is right, this type often does not respond great to medications. While the medication might dull the headache, without addressing the root cause (mobility issue) it is sure to return. Rather a cervicogenic headache responds best to hands-on treatment plus active movement. In fact, it is possible to have a person reporting a 9/10 headache pain at treatment outset walk out of the treatment room without a headache at all.
This type of headache has the potential to respond very rapidly to treatment. And once under control, it is one that can be easily managed by completing regular movement or even prevented altogether. This fact is often mind-blowing to those who have often suffered for months or years without a true solution.
