Remaining Active as You AGE

  • October 23, 2017

The topic of remaining active as you age is an important one. This is especially vital considering the aging population and chronic health conditions. The question becomes, what is stopping you from exercise or activity? Is it time, injury, laziness, or just do not know what is safe to do? If it is any of those 4 items which should cover most individuals, then read on.

I hope that we can all acknowledge the benefits of physical activity or exercise. It is well researched and published of all the health gains that can be achieved this way. And further enhanced with a good diet, but we will leave that piece out for now. What we know is physical activity results in an increase in all those good chemical within the body which can enhance energy, mood, and sense of well-being. Plus, activity can help keep a body flexible, strong, and balanced.

“Age is just a number” and “you are only as old as you think or feel.” These are cliche quotes, but are vary applicable. I have worked with plenty of older adults who remain as active or more so than others 20 or even 30 years younger. How is this possible? Simply…mindset and (use it or lose it). These older adults have not let age stop them. They regularly work out and participate in any/all activities they want to.

Our bodies are highly tuned machines and if not taken care of they will break down. We take care of our cars, brush our teeth, BUT (for some reason) DO NOT do what is necessary for the health of our muscles and joints. To keep our body running smoothly we must be ACTIVE. See there…active…physical activity. This does not mean you must run, jump, bike, swim, but it does mean you should be doing something that moves your body and gets your heart pumping. Sitting around all day on a computer does nothing good for our body.

I began writing about being active as you age. So, how do you remain active as you age? Simply put, you get active NOW and do not stop moving. Whatever age you are, there is NO reason you cannot go out and just walk. Even if you feel you cannot walk for say 30 minutes, what is stopping you from starting with 5 minutes? There is no harm in starting slow. Everyone must start somewhere BUT the key is to just start doing something.

But I have never been one to exercise? Well…do you want to be stuck in a chair and lose the ability to complete simple daily tasks active as you age? NO, so get up and start moving.

Too often we find barriers to activity. This gets us no where FAST. The time is NOW to do something about it. If you have a desire to be more mobile, active, and independent as you age, then lets get going. Don’t know where to start? Then time to have a conversation with a qualified health professional to help get you moving to a healthier, more active life as you age. Or you can begin to get more answers by clicking HERE.
