This Sciatica is Killing Me

For those suffering with sciatica, daily activities can be quite a painful chore. That sharp, shooting pain in the back of their leg can really shut a person down. Many with sciatica will limit or even avoid many necessary daily tasks due to pain.

Sciatica by definition is a radiating pain in the back aspect of the leg typically associated with back pain. This pain will follow the path of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica does not cause front of the leg pain and all leg pain is not sciatic pain. There can be and are other reasons for radiating or referred leg pains. Those living with this condition very quickly they learn what movements, positions, or activities hurt. Quite often sitting and bending over are two of the worst things. The direct pressure on the nerve path from sitting tends to be awful leaving the person unsure of what to do beyond standing or walking. Additionally, the increased “stretch” that happens to the nerve path when bending over tends to keep that person from picking items off the floor.

Some may find comfort lying down but often standing and walking feels the best for these individuals. This does not mean they have no pain, but less than sitting. In these circumstances it is best to do what feels best for the body. So, stand and walk to keep the pressure off and the pain level lower. Now this can be problematic for those who have “desk” jobs. The best solution is to stand and move regularly or switch to a standing desk. While this may not be optimal, it is certainly better than suffering while sitting.

Routinely people living with the severe pain of sciatica will attempt exercise suggested by a friend or that they found on the internet. At times, this approach may work, but far too often it does not. This is when and where is it important to seek professional medical guidance. A muscle and joint expert (like a physical therapist) is best suited to assess the situation and develop a plan to solve the problem.
