Why you might need to see a PT if you struggle with…

  • October 22, 2018

In this 4th installment of PT month, I want to shed light on why you may want or need to see a Physical Therapist (PT). To answer this question, we need to remember what the WHO a PT helps.

PTs help individuals struggling with ANY form of muscle or joint issue. This is not just athletes or after a surgery. And it does include someone who may have suffered a stroke, have Parkinson’s disease, or even have MS. PT is not just for the young or old, it is for everyone. Everyone who wishes to be, remain, or get active again.

PTs work to get people back to doing what they love. Unable to walk for exercise? Have difficulty climbing steps? Avoiding going on a trip because you think you can’t keep up? These are all things PTs help people get back to doing. A question to ask yourself is WHY can’t (or think you can’t ) you do something? Is it because of pain, strength, lack of flexibility, surgery, or fear? NO matter what the reason, PTs can guide you back to doing what you love.

Tried PT before or everything else without success? Given up hope? Resigned to taking pain medication?  Don’t despair, all those false starts help inform the next person you ask to help you. No one wants to make a decision unless they believe it will help them. This fear can paralyze people, preventing them from making the choice for someone to help them. Do not fret. Ask questions of the person you are considering. Being informed of how they can help you will help you make a more confident decision. And confidence and belief are powerful tools to help you get out of pain and get moving.

I have written before but will do so again…if you have struggled with (fill in the blank) for more than 4 weeks, it is time to get some help. The wait and see approach rarely works….AND the longer a person struggles, avoiding activity, movement, etc, the more difficult it becomes. A solution is not impossible, it just often takes a bit more time.

So…

If you are someone or know someone who is struggling with (fill in the blank), it is time to ask the question…what is the tipping point. What has to happen to make the call to get some help to get back to enjoying life???
