Back pain is the most common reason to visit physicians across this country. On average 8 out of 10 people will experience back pain at some point in their life. Which side of the line are you on? The 80% who has had back pain or the 20% who has yet to experience it? Statistically speaking you will deal with it OR you know many people who have.
If you are the 80%, then you certainly know the toll it takes on you physically and even mentally. Living with the fear of not knowing when, if, or how the back pain will go away. Those who have experienced back pain do not want it to come back. But you know what, the recurrence rate for back pain is nearly 90%.
Most people suffer through back pain, taking pain medication just hoping to recover their function. Many will go to great lengths to recover trying everything they believe, they researched on the internet, or someone told them would help. The majority of people suffer, having no idea how to regain their function so let me help you out here with some tips to avoid pain or recover.
- Movement is good for the muscles, joints, and body in general. Reduce stiffness and keep your body loose by simply moving regularly. So many positive benefits here.
- Avoid sleeping on your stomach. It may be possible or comfortable for some, but not most. Often poor quality mattresses allow the spine to “sink” into the mattress resulting in increased strain on the back.
- Wear good supportive shoes. This can help reduce the “shock” through your lower body that results in strain on the back. Ever notice how when you put on a new pair of good shoes that your legs and body feel better. This is what you should strive for. Hint….this means high heel shoes are not optimal ladies.
- Avoid prolonged sitting. By sitting for more than 30 minutes (often with poor posture), the pressure of gravity on the spine can become hugely detrimental. Compression of the spine from sitting and weakness of the supporting muscles from inactivity are huge factors in back pain.
- Complete a regular set of exercises for your back. Exercising your back is just as important as brushing your teeth. You do not skip a day brushing your teeth to keep them healthy, so do not ignore your back.
There you have it. 5 simple tips to attempt to prevent back pain and/or reduce the pain you are currently experiencing. Back pain is hugely common and yet only about 7% of people actually get the best care they can for their back. Why you may ask? Simply because most people do not know what can be done to help them.
