Are you unable to sleep on a painful shoulder? Are you literally tired from not sleeping due to pain? If so, then it is time to find a solution to the problem.
I would venture a guess you likely have already tried a different position. But chances are a simple change of position just is not working. Because you probably find yourself waking up in pain in the middle of the night having rolled onto that painful shoulder. This is a rather common issue; one that is challenging to solve.
So what can I do to get a good night’s sleep without pain?
Here are a few options to try
- Sleep on the opposite side WITH a pillow under the shoulder that hurts. By using a pillow, it may place the shoulder in a more relaxed position, one that will hurt less. This can also help to discourage rolling over as the pillow will get in the way of turning onto the painful shoulder.
- Try #1 with the addition of putting a pillow behind your back. This extra pillow can again help reduce the likelihood of you turning over in your sleep and onto the painful shoulder.
- Sleep on your back with your sore arm propped. For those who can tolerate sleeping on their back, this can sometimes place the arm in a comfortable enough position to get a good night’s sleep.
- Address the reason for the shoulder hurting in the first place. This should be obvious but people often wait weeks or months to address shoulder pain. May feel it will just go away with some time, but when it does not and it starts to impact sleep, it is more important than ever to address it. Disrupted sleep due to pain is counterproductive in the healing process.
