Have you ever felt that your head feels heavy? That your head is too heavy for your neck to hold up or support. And very likely your head and/or neck hurts as well. If so, know these are common issues that are treatable.

People often describe difficulty lifting their head off their pillow. Another common complaint is feeling like they need to use their hand(s) to support their chin if looking down to work (especially later in the day). Still others will report that their head feels like they it is a bobble head doll. In any of these instances there is a good solution (more on this shortly).

Why does my head feel heavy?

Often this is due to weakness of the neck muscles. There are several layers of muscles both in the front and back of the neck. Weakness of any of these muscle groups can result in a feeling of heaviness.

So my neck is weak, what can I do?

Well…that starts with having a muscle and joint expert properly assess exactly what muscle groups are weak and then developing a specific plan to address it. Once a plan is developed, it will be progressed as you achieve benchmarks of exercise effectiveness along the way. Ultimately, as you progress through the stages of strength training for the neck, you should notice a reduction in head and neck symptoms.

What if I am not sure if my neck is weak?

Simply put…can you lay on your back and lift your head and hold it for 40 seconds. If not, then this is where the muscle and joint expert comes into play. Allow them to properly and safely assess your situation and then make the appropriate recommendations for you.
