Avoiding Winter Injuries

  • January 20, 2025

Winter sports and activities while fun can come with some injury risks. Whether it is skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, ice skating or hockey it is important that you take proper precautions to avoid injuries. Even if you are walking, running, or clearing snow from the driveway or sidewalk injury risks are plenty. So what steps can you take to avoid winter injuries?

To begin with make sure to properly warm up. Take a few minutes to get those muscles warm and limber while getting the heart to pump a bit before starting any physical activity. Next, you will want to properly dress for the cold. Remember as you exercise in the cold your body will warm up and you will sweat. But you also want to make sure to wear enough that you are not too cold to begin. So likely dressing in layers will be necessary. Also, participate at your level. Do not try to ski, snowboard, or compete above your level of comfort. This will reduce your risk for injuries due to putting yourself in unsafe situations.

Do not forget that proper footwear (equipment) is also important. You want to reduce your risk of any slip and fall. And if you have concerns about footing, it is better to avoid that area while walking or running. You always want to avoid slipping and falling as bones can break and ligaments can tear.

With respect to shoveling or removing snow here are a few tips. Use a smaller shovel to lighten the load. Turn your whole body to toss the snow vs twisting and throwing over one shoulder. Yes, it may take a few extra seconds, but your back and shoulders will be happier. Finally take breaks; injuries are more likely to occur when the body is fatigued. It is ok if the job takes longer…after all you aren’t 18 anymore.

So take the necessary steps to avoid injuries this winter while enjoying your winter activities.
