Did you know that one of the KEY indicators for Back Surgery is zip code?
Its true…Where a person lives can make them more or less likely to undergo a significant invasive procedure. Back surgery should not be determined in this manner AND is not something that should be performed without considering all other options first. Truly it should be a person’s LAST LAST Option after considering all other alternative conservative means.
But I can hear the objections right now…
I have this severe pain.
I have this disc issue that is bulging or herniated.
So and so had surgery and it helped them.
I have arthritis and it needs fixed.
Well, lets break this down to better understand. Disc issues (whether bulging or herniated) do happen as part of the normal aging process and ARE NOT necessarily the reason for pain. Yes, at times they may be a factor, but this is not ALWAYS the case. What’s more is that the body can and will actually heal itself if provided enough time and exercise stimulus.
Yes, some individuals do have good “results” after back surgery. BUT this is no guarantee. AND once a person has back surgery they are more likely to require a 2nd back surgery in the future. This is because once natural anatomy is tinkered with – abnormal stress and strain will develop and can lead to problems years down the road.
Arthritis- again normal aging process. Sure surgeons can go in there and “clean it up” but at what cost? In the paragraph above, the comment was made about the need for multiple surgeries. Well, when surgeons try to cut, fuse, repair…this is where those abnormal stresses build to the point of something else “going wrong” or becomes painful again years later. Which then leads back down the path to surgery in too many instances.
There are indications for surgery, but those instances are few in regard to the big picture. These issues would be: loss of leg/foot control and new onset of bowel/bladder dysfunction in relation to back pain. Short of those specific issues, time and activity are important for healing. Understanding that back pain is common and gets better in most instances is important for the healing process.
For anyone with new onset or even recurrent back pain, seeking more holistic methods of healing such as physical therapy, massage, acupuncture, etc are great alternatives. If the goal is to get you back to enjoying daily activities and time with family and friends quickly then finding a person who specializes in helping people overcome their back pain is important.
