As we just cleared the 1st leg of the holiday season, Thanksgiving, I felt compelled to write this.
Every year, I hear folks complain about 1) indulging in too much food and drink 2) lack of time for exercise and 3) how they don’t have time to take care of their own aches/pains. This usually results in complaints after Jan 2nd about the wt gain that may have happened. Also, many then feel it is time to finally help themselves. Meaning time to address nagging aches or pains they ignored during the holiday season. Or time to get back on that exercise or PT (physical therapy) program.
Why is it that people avoid doing what is necessary to help themselves first?
Very likely this stems from people’s innate desire to please others. Even if this is to the detriment of themselves or their health. With this in mind, lets take time this year to help yourself feel better along the way. This way, come Jan 2nd, you are not the person feeling down about how they feel. Be the person jumping into the new year feeling great and ready to tackle the next personal challenge.
Now I am sure you are wondering, where is this advice on how to BEAT the HOLIDAYS…Here it is.
- If you have aches/pains or are in PT, take at least 5-10 minutes per day to complete your program. We can all find this time- it is called getting up during the commercials of your favorite show and do your stuff. Not doing your homework over the holidays is the BEST way to make no progress. Do Not blame your PT outright if you did not do your part….
- Take 20-30 minutes per day and exercise (do anything). Walk during your lunch brake, before or after work…whenever. Think you don’t have the time? Make it. You will feel better by doing something positive for your health. You very likely will feel more energetic as a result of doing some form of exercise. Sitting on our butts is the worst thing we can do to our bodies. (And I am doing it right now writing this).
- MODERATION!!!!!!!!! Do I really need to write more. You very likely feel guilty after consuming all that food and drink after each and every holiday party…right? So mentally prepare yourself to eat or drink less. Drink water instead of empty calories, OR actually try eating some of the fruits or veggies (minus the high calorie dips) and not all the high calorie meatballs or crabcakes or cookies/cakes or whatever. (Though I do love my sweets as much as the next person).
- Try addressing your aches and pains now. Don’t wait until the new year. If another 5 or more weeks go by and you are still struggling with your problem….it will take that much longer to find the relief you want. Again, don’t think you have the time now? Well, most injuries heal much faster when addressed early. So by waiting, you very likely may spend more time in treatment later. Plus, don’t you think you will enjoy the holiday season more if your body does not hurt. (I just spoke with a lady this morning about how much she struggled through Thanksgiving meal preparation).
Lets help make this holiday season be one with less aches and pains. One with less frustration and regret later. Make the time for yourselves. No one is too busy to help themselves…the only thing getting in the way is the excuses people make to avoid addressing the primary issue. Enjoy the holiday season by taking time for yourself to feel better.
