Many with neck pain wonder what is the best pillow for neck pain. People spend hundreds of dollars searching for THE solution. Unfortunately, most still feel their pillow is the problem. Ultimately, there is no one right answer. However, there are some suggestions that may be helpful.
- You want a pillow that supports your head BUT does not tilt your neck either up or down. Having too much or not enough support can put strain on the neck. So if you feel your pillow pushes your head up, then you may need a thinner pillow. If you feel your head drops down to the bed a thicker pillow may be required.
- Pillow texture does not matter as much as the feel for you. Whether it is soft or firm, memory foam or beaded is not as important. What matters most is what feels most comfortable for your head/neck.
- Contoured pillow or not? As above, what feels comfortable for your head/neck. If you are not sure you can always create one of your own as a test. Roll up a bath towel and place it inside the pillow case. This should reduce the gap between your ear and your shoulder if you are laying on your side. It should feel supportive for your neck. You may need to adjust the thickness for comfort. If you like the feel, you could consider purchasing a contoured pillow. If not, then do not bother.
Understand that while a good pillow is important there could be more factors involved. That said, getting a restful night’s sleep is important. Lack of sleep, especially over a long period of time can enhance a person’s pain experience. So while there is no one best pillow for neck pain, there will be a right pillow for you.
