Have you ever left work feeling like your elbow hurt after typing all day? If so, your issue is quite common. Routinely people will report outer elbow (moreso than inner elbow) pain as a result of typing for hours on end.
Why you might ask?
Well…prolonged typing while sitting hunched over a computer all day is a risk factor for elbow pain. Have you ever tried typing without those elbow muscles firing? Not possible. In fact, those elbow muscles are used for almost EVERY SINGLE task a person does with their hands. Then you add in the rest of daily life stress and strain AND there you go, elbow pain.
The good news is…treating elbow pain such as this is typically successful
To begin with, it will be important to take regular (posture) brakes from the computer. Get up, move around, and change your posture. The static positioning and constant use are key reasons for the pain so changing things up is most helpful.
Next, look to modify your workstation if possible. Adjust the desk or chair height such that your arms rest comfortably to type at the computer. Additionally, you will want the computer screen at eye level such that you are able to sit tall and not slouched.
Third, look to stretch out your forearm muscles. These simple stretches can be helpful to reduce built up tension that ultimately can be a link to elbow pain. These stretches can be done while you are taking the regular (posture) breaks.
Finally, and maybe the most important item is to seek care from a muscle and joint specialist. This specialist will teach the exact changes to make or best exercises to complete to resolve your elbow pain quickly. The longer the issue is present, the longer it often takes to resolve…so it is unwise to wait and see for months just hoping the pain will resolve.
