There are 17 different types of headaches classified by the International Headache Society. And at least one type of headache is associated with neck pain. That’s right, it is possible to have both neck pain plus headaches acting together.
Cervicogenic headaches are headaches that are generated from the neck (or the neck is the source). This means the muscles, nerves, or spinal bones are related as the cause. With this type, the individual tends to report their headache seems to come from the base of their skull and wraps up the side of their head toward the ear or even the eye. Often these are only on one side but could be both or even switch sides from day to day.
People who suffer from these headaches often identify sitting posture/position as a likely trigger. Many spend countless hours working on a computer or with their head forward or down reading/working. These individuals will typically be aware they are less likely to have a headache on a day when they are not at work…because they are doing more varied tasks/moving head or neck more regularly.
What this story indicates is the need for more regular movement. And above and beyond just movement, there is the need to specifically move the head/neck and not be focused for hours in one particular posture.
The good news is, one of the key ways to reduce this type of headache is MOVEMENT.
And then the next step is to address the muscles and soft tissues that are related. This is often accomplished by working with a muscle and joint specialist who routinely treats this type of condition. Treatment often includes both hands-on treatment plus active exercise. By then learning a specific series of exercises (to create and maintain a healthy level of motion or movement of the neck), the individual can begin to not only control but prevent these headaches from occurring.
