I have neck pain and a headache

Are you frustrated dealing with not neck pain and headache as well? If so, know that these issues together are fairly common. There are numerous headache classifications based on what you read but specifically here are headaches directly related to neck pain. This type of headache is called a cervicogenic headache.

A cervicogenic headache is produced by muscle tension or joint mobility dysfunction within the neck. These headaches tend to wrap from the base of the skull up and around the side of the head. This type of headache might appear on either or both sides at the same time. This type of headache is different from other types in that head/neck movements are the precipitating factor for them. And yes, there may be a postural component to them…as in sitting slouched with the head poked forward for hours every day can be a factor. Understand that slouching is not bad, rather this issue is the total time spent slouching. This is especially true if the person does not spend time each day performing other movements to counter-balance the slouching.

The good news is with this type of headache is that they are easily treated. Data suggests that a combination of hands-on treatment plus active movement/exercise is helpful. In fact, it is possible for a person to get relief in a matter of minutes with the right treatments. Now that does not mean they will never come back. It will take a concerted effort by the individual to work through the prescribed movements and exercises to keep them away. But by completing regular active movements, it is possible to control a headache if one begins to appear and ultimately prevent them altogether.
