Over 40? Time for your musculoskeletal checkup.

  • October 21, 2024

If you are over 40 then it is time for your musculoskeletal checkup. Think of it like going to the dentist for your bi-annual checkup and cleaning. Age-related changes begin to happen more quickly after the age of 40, so it is a good time to begin taking proactive steps. Take measures to address any small issue(s) BEFORE they become more problematic ones. There is no need to wait until some issue truly takes you out of the game. By being proactive, you have the potential to remain active for many years to come.

Humans by nature tend not to be proactive, rather we are often reactive (to issues). But why? Why wait until your body hurts to do something about it? Why not be proactive, working on your strength, flexibility, balance, and more? This way you do not groan getting up from a chair or walking up stairs? Seems kind of simple.

There has been discussion of adding a musculoskeletal checkup to Medicare’s wellness visits. A better question is why wait to 65? Why not start this process much sooner. We already know people’s mobility and function declines with age. And along with this comes increased costs for medication, imaging, and surgery.

What if all this could be headed off before it all began? The potential is there…and it all starts with a musculoskeletal checkup. Learn what you can do to keep your body functioning well. Think of it like brushing your teeth and flossing to keep your teeth healthy. Only with the musculoskeletal checkup you will be taking steps to keep your muscles and joints healthy.

This could be accomplished in as few as 1-2 visits every 6-12 months. At each visit you can be screened and then prescribed a series of exercises, stretches, or movements to optimize your muscle and joint function. This would be a small price to pay to keep your body feeling good so that you can enjoy family trips, exercise, and more.
